NWSDA was formed in 1959 by a small group of people interested in working dog teams recreationally. The initial founding group included Dick and Dianne Ross (Bothell, WA), Bill and Jeanette Bedingfield  (Bothell, WA), Bob and Dorothy Black (Monroe, WA), Bud and Janus Stantorf (Seattle, WA), Bill and Beverly Ackerman (North Bend, WA), Ray and Ruby Thompson (Alderwood Manor, WA), Mel Lightle (Auburn, WA), and Walter Moore (Auburn, WA). Their dog teams included samoyeds, elkhounds, malamutes, and siberian huskies.
